History of the Chassiron Lighthouse<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Originally, in 1685, a 33-metre tower was built to serve as a landmark for the maritime military missions responsible for protecting Rochefort. These missions were carried out through channels which had to be illuminated. In addition to this, there were shipwrecks on the northernmost coast of the island. A lighthouse was therefore needed to provide light for the sailors. This 33-metre tower, called the Colbert Tower after the man who ordered its creation, was lit by two wooden fires. This type of lighting was deliberately chosen to distinguish the tower from other lighthouses in the vicinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1834, due to the now obvious inefficiency of the Colbert Tower, the Chassiron Lighthouse was built and commissioned in 1836.<\/strong> From the latter date onwards, the lighthouse was equipped with all the lighting technologies of its time. Until 1905, the lighting lamps continued to evolve, until today they have a 250W lamp with metal halides. In 1926, the lighthouse was still all white. In 1926, the lighthouse was still all white. But from that year onwards, another difference was made, with a painting of three black stripes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In 2007, the lighthouse underwent a major tourist revolution. The surrounding gardens were redeveloped and a museum was built on the first floor of the lighthouse.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
